Top 5 Tips for Older Job Seekers

This post is for my fellow job seekers who are over 40 or 50. About 10 years ago, I started noticing that I was one of the oldest people at my job. Suddenly, all of the managers in my previous positions were 30 or younger.

As a matter of fact, in the last five years, most of my managers have been in their 20s. Here are some tips to help find a job:

1. Update and age-proof your résumé

  • Remove “Objective” and replace it with skills and a professional summary.
  • Avoid dates and job titles that indicate your age — see a few examples: Never use “boss”; instead, use supervisor, manager, or director
Instead of “secretary,” use “executive assistant.”
Replace “aide” with the paraprofessional title.
Look up your job duties to find the appropriate job title.
  • Highlight recent trainings and remove graduation and job dates over 15 years old. Try to avoid anything from the 1990s and focus on recent and relevant experience.
  • Use age-neutral language. Avoid my favorite word, “seasoned.”
