This post is for my fellow job seekers who are over 40 or 50. About 10 years ago, I started noticing that I was one of the oldest people at my job. Suddenly, all of the managers in my previous positions were 30 or younger.
As a matter of fact, in the last five years, most of my managers have been in their 20s. Here are some tips to help find a job:
1. Update and age-proof your résumé
Remove “Objective” and replace it with skills and a professional summary.
Avoid dates and job titles that indicate your age — see a few examples: Never use “boss”; instead, use supervisor, manager, or director Instead of “secretary,” use “executive assistant.” Replace “aide” with the paraprofessional title. Look up your job duties to find the appropriate job title.
Highlight recent trainings and remove graduation and job dates over 15 years old. Try to avoid anything from the 1990s and focus on recent and relevant experience.
