Sweet Cream Memories
I don’t know why, but the cold weather and winter storms seem to bring back memories of me cooking with my Grandmother. She had a beautiful soul with phenomenal cooking skills and healing hands.
In the winter (after the first snow) we would get excited for the next storm because she would make Snow Cream. Snow Cream is a dreamy creamy winter treat that I can still taste.
After the first layer of snow came down, my Grandmother and I would go outside and place a large pot on the top of Pop Pop’s truck. The next morning we’d wake up to get the freshly fallen snow and pray it didn’t ice over. It never did.
Then, she’d mix the eggs, milk, and sugar together with a splash of vanilla extract and pour it over the snow. After a few mixes it was either the perfect ice cream texture or a sweet, creamy slushy — but either way it had to go in the freezer to harden for 30–40 minutes or more. It tasted like ice milk but the fact it was made of snow made it magical and always made me giggle when I ate it.
I would pass on this tradition when I had my own family but modified the recipe to accommodate our lactose intolerance. I used coconut cream or almond milk with the other ingredients.
